Retelling John 4

by Phoebe

As part of my school assignment, we had fun retelling Jesus’ meeting the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4.

When it was past midnight and Jesus was on His way from East Coast Park to Tanjong Rhu, He decided to stop by a coffee shop at Geylang Lorong 20 and sat down at the same table with a girl with a bright red tight dress and full make-up. He asked her if he could buy her a drink. Looking at him, the girl replied Him with more questions, “Eh, you look so rich wat. Why you need me to pay for your drink? What you doing in Geylang? You want to follow me back to my place after I finish makan[1]? Tonight very good business, I can only eat now. You wait for me, I will finish fast fast.”

Jesus replied, “You know, I have a drink that can fulfill all your heart’s desire.”

With a look of surprise, the girl asked, “Where is this from? Is it the talisman water from the Tua Pek Kong[2] temple down there?”

Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give will never, ever be thirsty again. The water that I will give you will give you true happiness.”

The girl said to him, “Mister, please give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty and I don’t have to come and work here.”

Jesus said to her, “Go and call your husband and come here.”

The girl answered him, “I don’t have husband.”

Jesus said to her, “Yeah, you are right to say that you have no husband; last time you had five husbands and the one now is not your husband. What you said is true.”

The girl asked Jesus, “Mister, how you know so much? Are you a dang kee[3]? Which temple you from?”

Jesus said, “I am not a dang kee. I am Jesus, the one who God sent, the only one who is worthy of your worship. When you worship and pray to Him, everything will be shun shun[4].”

The girl said, “Don’t bluff[5] la, I know my life is like that because of my previous life. It will not be shun shun. I will only see God when I die la.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the One who has come to save you.”Soon, a couple sat down at the same table looking suspiciously at Jesus and the girl. In a haste, the girl told Jesus, “You wait here, I will go and bring my sisters to come and talk to you.” The girl quickly left the table to go back to where she came from to tell her sisters about the conversation that she had with Jesus.
