Welcoming youths from rural countrysides to a home in an urban town in Thailand

by Phoebe

As part of a project for Cross-Cultural Discipleship class, I developed a process to welcome youths from rural countrysides into a home to an urban town in Thailand. Typically when youths in Thailand reach the age of 15, they travel out of their hometowns to seek higher education. They usually live with relatives or boarding hostels. As missionaries, we also want to open up our home in the urban town to these youths, especially from the village churches, in order to continue the discipleship journey.

At the end of the welcoming process, we had a contextualised communion with the following elements:

Sticky rice – individual grains representing individual people, but held together in stickiness because of Christ. A staple in Thailand which parallels bread during Jesus’ time.

Roselle drink – red and representing blood that Jesus shed for us and a reminder of His sacrifice as we sacrifice for each other in this home.

The communion serves as a reminder that we are all part of the body of Christ and as we live together as a family, we are also a community to reflect Christ to each other.
