A day called ‘Today’

by Jon

“God again set a certain day, calling it ‘Today.’ ” – Hebrews 4:7

As I am writing this, we have started packing our home in preparation for our move back to Thailand this year. This week was spent putting beloved books that we have chosen to keep into boxes, sealing them up and labelling the boxes to be sent over to Thailand ahead of us.

As we label the boxes, we have started a system of cataloguing our boxes by adding a box number followed by a blank, with the intention of writing in the total number of boxes on each box label after we have completed our packing.

It is during this labelling that I am reminded of how God leads us every day. Just like how I don’t know the number of boxes we have in total until we finally finish packing, we all don’t know how many remaining years, months or days we have in our lives. We might live for decades, or our lives might be taken away from us tomorrow. This realisation makes me consider what I want and hope to achieve in this fleeting life.

But just as the only way of finally knowing the total number of boxes is to patiently complete each box, I am reminded that instead of pondering about the time we have left on this earth, we are all called to live day by day faithfully. Each day may be one on the mountain tops, exhilarating and refreshing; in the valleys that are heavy, gloom and troubling; or just a monotonous, featureless plateau. Every day is a day that God has designated as “Today”, with each day a new opportunity to heed God’s call to live as Christ’s disciples.

As I can expect our sealed boxes to increase and loose items at our home to decrease, I pray that I will live each day faithfully in the eyes of the Lord as we enter a new chapter of our journey with God.
